　　作者霍尼曼从小喜爱阅读，每周去图书馆的次数多到有点“荒谬”。她曾在格拉斯哥大学学习法语，之后又在牛津大学继续学习法国诗歌。然而，她认为自己不适合走学术道路，于是先后从事了一系列“幕后工作”，包括公务员和行政人员。
